BACKGROUND

Oxford International School was established in 1987 in response to the growing need to provide both the international and local communities with a global education at par with Panama's growing importance as an international center.

The School is a private, non-sectarian, politically neutral, day school committed to developing each students full learning potential, through the use of modern teaching methods. The School offers a global education with an international emphasis. Each students is stimulated to acquire a world view academically, socially, culturally and ethically. Through positive reinforcement, the staff recognizes and rewards students efforts, fostering their development as it allows them to explore new areas, thereby promoting a sense of satisfaction and enthusiasm about learning.

Each student is treated as an individual within the context of his academic, cultural and personal background. Parents participate actively in the instruction of their children, and while doing so allow them to benefit academically and socially.

The academic program is designed to develop each student's full learning potential. A strong elementary and secondary multicultural program conducted in English is integrated with the host country's (Panama) curriculum. Specialist teachers provide classes in art, physical education, computer science and foreign languages. The School utilizes international resources available through the community to broaden and enrich its program.

A low teacher to student ratio ensures that students receive the individual attention which educational research indicates is a great factor in promoting learning.

The pre-school program is rich in activities aimed at promoting the development of the child as an individual. Classes are taught entirely in English. Children work in small groups under the guidance of a teacher and a teacher's aide. The program is organized into themes of interest to the child.

The elementary school program emphasizes the development of attitudes and concepts, mathematical and computer skills and the student's ability to communicate orally and in writing, both in English and in Spanish. The program also seeks to instill self-confidence and emphasizes family and community integration.

A well-rounded high school program prepares students to continue their education at local or international universities whether their future interests lie in the field of business, science or the humanities. Oxford International high school graduates receive a typical American high school diploma sealed with The Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA), and a classic diploma accredited by the Ministry of Education (Bachiller en Ciencias y Letras).

The School is centrally located on the corner of Ave. Federico Boyd and Via España. Tel: 265-6422, Fax: 265-7446.
